Travel Geotac #1: Marina Barrage

So here’s my very first geographical tac(k) or geotac. As the shot above shows, the place is Marina Barrage (MB). If I were to thumb a tac on the map where MB is located, it would be on the Southern end of the little Red Dot, Singapore. It’s actually a dam built across the Marina Channel to keep out sea water and create a fresh-water resevoir in the city. Completed in Novenber 2008, it’s Singapore’s 15th reservoir.

Once you pass the main MB sign, you’ll be greated by a sculpture-fountain, as shown by the HDR picture above, made up of an actual size drainage pump (that blue structure on the right) used by the MB to manage the water level in the reservoir.

The fountain area is pretty cool as not only do you have the usual fountain-heads gently jetting up H2O but if you look at the picture carefully you can actually see plumes of water mist being sprayed out too!

And just before you enter the MB on the right, you are greeted by this simple and almost nondescript welcome sign which is quite surprising since the MB is quite an architectural structure. If you don’t believe me just look at the entrance way into the MB shown below.

So how does the whole MB look like? Well I wish I have enough money to hire a helicopter to go up and take aerial shots of the MB to show you but unfortuantely I’m too poor to do that. But maybe this next shot might give an idea of how the MB looks like structurally.

The reservoir, being one-sixth the size of Singapore, would certainly play an important part in ensuring Singapore has enough water supply since it is a fact that we are simply not self-sufficient with adequate water supply and have to buy water from Malaysia. But that is not the only benefit of having the MB as this freshwater reservoir is touted as having ”3-in-1 benefits” by the Public Utilities Board (PUB). They have even placed a metal plaque on the wall in the MB to explain the 3 benefits – Water Supply, Flood Control and Lifestyle Attraction (see picture below).

Anyway so what’s it like inside and around the MB? Well stay tune for the next couple of posts. More on the MB coming up soon. If you want to be alerted of when these posts (and others) are up, why not just click the RSS button at the top of the blog and subscribe to my blog feed.  Till then thanks for dropping by and reading. Cheers!
